SPRING [return]
A Note From Melissa

As spring approaches, the daffodils flower in our gardens and parks, the cherry blossom flower on the trees and hopefully the weather improves. Gradually we all re-appear from our hermit-like existence over the winter months, taking longer walks with our faithful four legged friends.

Just like people, animals should gradually build up their strength and stamina. One very long walk on a lovely spring day after months of inactivity usually ends with a visit to the vet surgery, especially for our more senior pets as they stiffen up afterwards.

Their cold wet noses are in and out of all sorts of exciting smells and substances, so this is a good opportunity to catch up with their quarterly worming protocol to cover all types of worms (there are at least 7 different common worms your dog is at risk from). Your veterinary surgery can advise on the best protocol for your pet.

This is also a good time to check their vaccinations are up to date. We are seeing an increase in the number of dogs coming in with inflamed livers.....no, not from indulging in the bottle at Christmas! With the increased number of foxes about, the unvaccinated and those out of date are increasingly at risk of canine infectious hepatitis which can be spread by the fox. Leptospirosis is also contagious and can be spread by rats. An annual health check and vaccination will ensure that your dog gets the best preventative healthcare possible.

Finally, remember we live in an area with ticks. Already dogs and cats have been seen with ticks attached. There are good spot-on treatments to prevent and kill tick infestations, just ask for advice.

So go out and enjoy the fresh air, but don’t bring any unwelcome guests home with you!
